Let’s look at the energy in the cards for this week

Fire

Fire consumes, it is destructive. In the forest it removes underbrush, old trees and all that is dead. There is chaos and danger when fire is burning.

Fire is also creative. New plants and trees grow where the old and dead have been consumed. There is order and growth when new things grow.

Fire is your passions. What do you enjoy, what gives you energy, what draws out the energy within you? When I was a scuba diver, what I did during the working day had no relevance to what I did in the evening or weekend as a diver. The passion of fire is the answer to the question, what do you enjoy, not what do you do

Fire is warmth when the sun goes down. But, beware of too much warmth. There is a point where it burns and is painful. To fully step into the energy of fire is to be utterly transformed, like the Phoenix rising from the ashes.

The fire that burns inside us can make us reactive and short-tempered toward others and situations. Fiery emotions directed at others, whether they are family, friends or colleagues can burn you when those who feel your fiery ager, have their turn, and breathe fire on you.

Remember, do unto others as you would do unto yourself.

Standstill

Stand still represents a pause. Now is the time to pause in what you are doing. Take a breath and relax. When things stall, or stagnate, or when you feel stuck, this energy appears as a reminder that constant action isn’t going to get you where you want to go. Perhaps it’s time to gather more information or just wait until the universe makes the next move.

Now is the time to recharge. Read that book you have wanted to but not found time to because of all the action you have created or experienced. Go out and play at something you enjoy. Recognise that Standstill is not inaction. It is just a different form of action that will give you the energy for what is to come.

Many Paths

Your Life path lays in front of you. What you bring to your journey is what will determine if yours is a path of suffering, a path of wisdom, a path of bliss, or a path of loss.

Consider a traveler who met two stonemasons. He asks the first what he is doing, and the mason replies, “I am squaring out this stone.” He asks the second stonemason who is doing the exact same thing, and gets the reply, “I am building a cathedral.”

One has a job; the other has found his calling. He is part of an endeavor much greater than himself. Be sure you pick a path with your heart. That is your life path purpose.

That life path is calling you to take a big, bold step and leave the beaten path. The Universe are supporting your move. Now is not the time to delay, delay may cause you to miss the moment! You have outgrown your current situation and risk losing your way if you do not take this opportunity.

Be sure you attend to both your path through this earth, as well as your journey through the stars.

Let’s look at the energy in the cards for this week

Magic

To a child, the world around them is full of magical things, the child sees everything as possible. Even though we are in a pandemic, flowers still bloom, babies are conceived, and born, these are all signs of potential and the child see this and believes in it.

As we grow and shape our lives, we must pay attention to the signs that tell us we are on the right path. We must look for the next action to take. We must also know to stay the course and not be diverted away from what we need to pay attention to.

Magic tells you that you are doing the right things, with the right energy and the right intention to make your dreams come true. The Universe, your angels and guides, all are supporting you and listening, acting on your behalf! Pay attention to them. Magic gives birth to miracles.

The Sorcerer

The Sorcerer is the Black Shaman. The Black Shaman works with and for the malevolent spirits, he or she is destructive to human existence. The Black Shaman is called on and paid by those who have a self-centered behavior and desire to harm others to gain what they want, or, prevent others from achieving their goal.

Think, if you are a supervisor, did you stop someone leaving early to take care of a child, or an aging parent because you could, not because there was another solution? It is easier to harm someone or something than to create.

Take a moment to look into and at the destructive part of your psyche that misuses power, or holds on to and values resentment, vengeance, lust, greed, bigotry, or hatred.

The Sorcerer is an energy that challenges you. Challenges you to change your thinking and feelings. This is a card of second chances. From this moment forward think, feel and act differently. Do not value the darkness in you and around you. Even if darkness is done to you.

The Corn

Corn us food, it is nourishment. Grow it, eat it, crush it and transform it into something else to eat. The stalks can be used for roofing and with the mud of Mother Gaia, make walls.

It represents the mother of sustenance and tangible abundance. This symbol represents material prosperity in the world and provides stability and sustenance to many. There is more than enough to go around.

Corn is planted, then grows and when it has finished growing its fruit appears. In our lives, we plant many things, ideas, hopes, wishes. Even plans are planted, a plan is really a description of how our ideas will bring about what we need and hope for.

In moments when you were losing faith, you continued. Remember, it is always darkest before the dawn but you continued on, planting and nurturing. Now the spirit of the Corn comes to honor this and show you how bountiful the harvest is.

The corn takes time to grow and provide the abundance you are about to reap. It is time to be warry of shortcuts, things that seem to be too good or inner feelings of being entitled to a certain outcome.

The farmer, like you, knows deep down that the crop must be nurtured, the farmer plants the seed corn with intention and respectfully in conjunction with Mother Gaia. Let go of insecurity, feelings or thoughts of there not being enough, or that someone else could take what is yours. You have all you need for success.

The corn says this is your time to receive. Regardless of whether the rewards are financial or the kind of prosperity measured in quality rather than quantity. Corn is a symbol of blessing. Don’t forget to share your good fortune.

Let’s look at the energy in the cards for this week,

Wild Woman

Energy, freedom of expression, passion. These are all things the Wild Woman speaks to. The energy in this card speaks to your inner purity. No matter what life brings us, throws at us, we have an inner core of sparkling, free energy. If you are keeping this hidden or bottled up for some reason, maybe you are frightened of what is in you? Now is the time to let the bright light shine regardless of what your egoic mind says. You do not live in the container it creates by worrying about consequences, that do not materialise. Listen to your inner self. Be true, open and expressive. Let the Great Spirit decide what happens. You’ll be happy you did.

Mystical Shaman

This card speaks to the myths we dream and the stories we wish to write. Now is the time to be author of your life’s story. Do not allow others to write a story for you and expect you to follow it. Create your own and be true to it. Live it, be in the NOW, the moment and enjoy the story you create for yourself.

Life, like a coin has two sides, a spiritual one, where you learn and grow. You grow by both the pleasures and happiness of life, the colour of flowers, love of and for animals, pets, and people who bring good things in to your life. You grow by the challenges, stress, and unhappiness which you navigate through. You grow by the physical essence of life. The taste of new food and wine, how the fitness and health allow you to venture out, to touch and feel, and smell.

On the other side of the coin, if the story you are following is not yours, let your story, the one you write for yourself break through. Do not fixate on the ending, a good story is worth the read, the turning of every page to see what is next. Live in your story, in the moment. Be in the NOW.

The Rainbow

In the Himalayas, the rainbow is seen as the full realization of our essence. The rainbow is a part of us, the colours of a rainbow are the colours of the Seven Chakras that are in each of us. We have to look up and in the right direction after a storm to see a rainbow created by the Sun. The rainbow symbolizes the end of the storm we have just passed through. It affirms all is well and that you are in right relationship with Spirit.

There may still be a few storm clouds in the sky, but they will pass. Remember the saying, “the night always appears darkest before dawn.” Continue your work, do not give up, do not surrender hope or positive belief in your future and what you are doing. Also, this is not the time to claim victory, it has not arrived yet, the Laurel crown of victory is not quite complete, even if you can sense it coming.

This is the Shaman Energy card Reading for the week starting Monday 2020/12/21

The Owl

Owl Spirit arrives to remind you that the wisdom within you is informed by your keen senses and the wisdom within the consciousness we all share. Even in the darkest night, the owl sees clearly and is guided by every sense it has, including the first sense of intuition. Right now, your sensitivities are turbocharged and you are receiving messages from all directions. Owl Spirit reminds you to be wise and pay attention to what’s between the lines, what is invisible to the naked eye, what cannot be heard with the ears, and what others may not be able to perceive. With all your senses aroused, you have much knowledge available to you. Clarity will come as you sit with all that you are sensing, allowing your intuition to guide you in understanding the whole and not just the parts. Let your wisdom arise and be your guide as you trust the acuity of all your senses. Intuition is real and can provide the clarity you need to understand your situation right now. Your relationship, your finances, your job—whatever it is, you can see the truth clearly now.

The Owl lends you the eyes that you need in order to see in the dark around you. The Owl can cut through the shadows to illuminate the real truth. Someone may be trying to camouflage his or her real intentions. Deceit, lies, and unclear intentions are exposed with Owl energy.

The Owl also reminds you to be honest with yourself and snap out of any lies or denial inside of  you. Lying to yourself is the way that you’ll remain lost in a prison of your own making. The Owl appears to ask you to seek the truth in the darkest places within yourself. This will set you free and restore you to wholeness.

All is well with the Owl to guide you. Deep wisdom into human nature is gained through the ability to recognize untruths. This is an important marker on your path.

The Medicine Wheel

The shaman recognizes the four cardinal signs of the compass. The wheel represents the circular pattern of life and it will help you understand your inner self.

Sit quietly, to the South. You are clinging to, old desires, relationships, friendships, or a job. Release them and make space for the new that is coming.

Sit quietly and look to the West and consider toxic relationships. Maybe at work, friends, a lover, look at the negative feelings they create in you, and how they drain your energy, they must go.

Look to the North. Pride, not in an arrogant way. Your passions, do you show them? Are you an artist who never paints, a musician that never records? A writer who never writes? Why? Change this. When asked, be proud to say what you are.

Look to the East. Anger. Think of how you want to live life, write it down. Visualize it in your mind with clarity. This is your future that you want to manifest. Anger is fire, use it to add energy, boldness, and drive to your future.

The Ancient Ones

The Ancient ones bring ancient knowledge with them. They are shamans who walked the earth like us, they come from the distant past and a different path of knowledge and belief. Shamans have been helping and supporting human kind live and pass over and be reincarnated for tens of thousands of years. European cave paintings and carvings showing a shaman date from the Paleolithic era, 3.3 million years ago. Graves of shaman 12,000-year-old and older have been discovered in Israel and the Czech Republic.

We are all, collectively, engaged in creating a new future for ourselves and for all things on this earth. Mother Gia blesses us with abundance, health and love but relies on us to return that bounty.

Now is the time to sit down and quieten that busy egoic mind and consider what your future is and how you can include the earth, that gives us so much. A new home, make it a home where you can grow things, plants and flowers so that bees have pollen to collect to take back to their hives and make honey.

This is a time to be ambitious and purposeful. Now is the time to reach for your goals and not worry about whether “you can” or “should” be so ambitious. Now is not the time to hold back, worry, be anxious or fearful of biting off more than you can chew. Remember, when the builders started constructing the Cathedral Santa Maria del Fiore in Florence, Italy, they did not know how to build the dome that was designed. They expected the later builders would have the skills necessary to do so.This is time for you to have that faith in yourself and the spiritual energy the Ancient Ones are making available to you.

So, let’s get to the subject of this Podcast…

So, Santa, is a shaman – Let’s dig in to the meaning of the age-old traditions that were, and some still are celebrated around Christmas time. At the same time, we will discard the consumerism and commercialism that surrounds Christmas today.

Winter Solstice – the Shortest day of the year. Perhaps the one thing that stands out about this day is the televised celebration of the Solstice by Druids at Stone Henge in England.

The scientific explanation for the Winter and Summer Solstices is the way the earth travels around the sun. The earth does not travel around the sun in a circular orbit, it is elliptical. At the same time, the earth does not rotate exactly on its axis, like a spinning top it oscillates slightly resulting in it tilting away from the sun during part of the year, and towards it at other times.

At the Winter Solstice in December, December 20th or 21st, we have the shortest day of the year; in the northern hemisphere this is when the earth is tilted away the Sun, the Sun is lower in the sky, and the hemisphere receives the least sunlight, and least warmth.

At the Summer Solstice in on June 20th or 21st we have the longest day of the year; in the northern hemisphere this is when the earth is tilted towards the Sun, the Sun is higher in the sky, and the hemisphere receives the most sunlight, and most warmth for a longer period of time.

It’s the opposite way round in the southern hemisphere

At the vernal equinox on March 20th, marks the start of Spring in the Northern Hemisphere. In the Southern Hemisphere, Spring starts September 22nd or 23rd. At the vernal Equinox, the days and nights are equal in length.

At the Winter Solstice, the sun appears to be stationary in the sky for three days because the sun rises to the same point in the sky three days in a row. Something it does not do at any other time.

The sun appearing to be stationary at the Winter Solstice represents the dying King or Sun God. This should not be confused with it disappearing at night. In Egyptian mythology the sun dies at sunset and is reborn at dawn, which is not what we are interested in here.

Go far enough north during the winter solstice, and you will not see the sun at all. The tilt of the earth is such that the sun does not appear at all during these three days. On December 24th the sun appears to start rising in the sky again, in Christian belief, the next day, December 25th is the birth of Jesus and many traditional celebrations have a manger as part of the festive decorations.

To the Shaman, Winter Solstice is a time of celebration and new hopes for crops, animal husbandry, babies will be conceived, and generally, hope for a good year ahead. The old year transforms or is reborn into a new one. Transformation is a very shamanic quality, the myths at this time point to the awakening of our true nature.

The shaman is an essential part of the community and at the winter solstice, the shaman, male or female, had special duties to perform, from these duties, it is the shaman traditions we use today to symbolize Christmas.

The traditional Christmas tree is an evergreen conifer, the dominant species of tree that grows in the harsh northern climates. Whether you have a real tree or an imitation one, it is the symbol of the tree that is important.

Amanita Muscaria mushroom
Amanita Muscaria mushroom

The Amanita Muscaria, mushroom grows at the foot of evergreen conifers and has a symbiotic relationship with the tree. Nutrients pass back and forth in their roots to the point where the mushrooms can’t grow without the tree resulting the mushrooms being seen as the fruit of the tree.

The mushrooms have a distinctive bright red cap with white spots or growths on it.

The shaman picks and dries the mushrooms by leaving them on the lower branches of the confer where they were picked. So, now we have a green conifer with red and white mushrooms drying on its branches. Does this remind you of the baubles you attach to the branches of your Christmas tree?

Early decorations on Christmas Trees were editable. It was too costly to have decorations that were not. Usually, the edible decorations were some sort of baked dough. Later, apples were used as they symbolized the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge. Apples were later replaced by shiny red balls, which were not edible.

When Shaman gathered mushrooms, they traditionally dress in vivid red and white clothes to symbolize the mushroom and let the spirits of the woods know what they are doing. In the northern climate, deep snow and ice make travel difficult. Some sort of sledge or sleigh is required to get around.

In the cold north, the lowest recorded temperature in Siberia was -67c / -97.3F. To survive outside in these temperatures layers of furs would be put on, making the person appear rather “chubby, or fat.”

In the northern climate’s reindeer are an important source of meat, fur, bone, and other animal products for all manner of traditional needs. They are an important source of power to pull things, one, or more, may be attached to a sleigh to move it through the snow, woods, and across the plains. This practice continues to this day, as horses are not hardy enough to survive and work in the harsh climate.

So, now we have a rather well-rounded person, riding a sleigh, pulled by one or more reindeer and dressed in red and white clothing.

The Amanita Muscaria mushroom does not contain psychedelic substances such as psilocybin or psilocin, it contains muscimol and ibotenic acid. But the mushrooms have a psychedelic like effect, and in rare cases can be poisonous to the person consuming them. The chemicals in the mushroom can cause chills, sweating, salivation, nausea and Ibotenic acid induces vomiting.

Today, some people boil thin slices of the mushroom in a lot of water for 15 minutes. This leaches out the active chemicals in the mushroom. Drinking the water will give you a high, discarding the water and repeating the boing process should result in mushroom flesh that can be eaten. Drying the mushrooms for 24 hours in an oven will also help to reduce or eliminate the muscimol and ibotenic acid. Please, do take this as a recipe for use of the mushrooms!

The positive effects of the mushroom include visions and altered states of consciousness, a sense of euphoria, and clarity of mind. Because of these positive effects the shaman brings what they have collected with them. They bring them in a sack for their own use and to share with the people they are visiting.

The need for shaman to perform ceremonies, conduct healing, retrieving souls in soul journeys is still very much needed even when the snow is deep and the door to the traditional nomads Yurt is snowed in. To get in the shaman climbs on the roof and enters through the smoke hole in the roof top.

So, now we have everything we recognize in Santa today. A portly shaman, dressed in red and white clothing, carrying a sack of good things, who arrived on a sleigh, pulled by reindeer, and entering through the smoke hole in the roof. If everyone is high on mushrooms, stories of the Shaman flying across the sky on their sleigh, pulled by faithful reindeer to visit many yurts during the night seems quite believable.

Have a wonderful holiday season and celebrate the Winter Solstice this year. Celebrate the start of the New Year which begins the day after the Solstice… not a week later!

The Sorcerer

The Sorcerer symbolizes beliefs and ideas of division, struggle and being without. We feel the sorcerer casts a dark shadow over our lives, but in reality, the shadows are own. Those shadows are feelings of separation from loved one, colleagues, pets. Feelings of conflict and aggression to others in order to achieve our self-centred goals.

Our shadows may be narrow, broad, or generous in their focus. Either way, our busy mind loves to feed off the shadow energy and its negative feelings. The sorcerer, is asking you to look at these energies, examine how destructive they are. What are you feeling? Resentment, vengeance, lust, greed, bigotry, or hatred about or to whom or what. These feelings are unjustified and not your spiritual core which is pushed away without consideration.

The Sorcerer challenges you, confronts your dark thinking and beliefs. Now! Is a second chance! Start over. Be strong and be vigilant about the darkness you are beings asked to recognise, and then, to discard.

Others are not blame for what is inside of you, what you allow to be there. Take a moment to create a sense of peace and move in another direction and do not allow those negative thoughts and feelings to grow again. You are done with them and that way of living.

The Gatherer

Your ships are coming in!

The gatherer is here to help you collect the bounty you have sown. Like a farmer you have worked at something in the belief it will grow into something beautiful and worthwhile. Something that will feed you and help nurture those you love.

It may have been something those around you do not value or tell you will come to nothing. They do not see the value in it that you do, they do not have seeds of their own to plant for their future. You have weathered the comments and the doubts showered on you. You have not followed their recommendations that would have meant giving up on your dreams, your beliefs.

Now is the time to trust in the bounty that is arriving and that there is more to come. Concentrate on the abundance and push away thoughts of scarcity and limitation. You have enough of what you need to gather all the abundance coming to you. You have more than enough to plant and nurture to bring more abundance for the future. The future will require more effort, but for now, enjoy the abundance coming to you.

JaguarThe Jaguar a creature of the jungle, it is an apex predator, it eats what it wants, it is powerful, rarely seen, it is never prey. If this speaks to you then you know the ways of the shadows and how to work behind the scenes for your best advantage, especially in the corporate world. Yet you are limited. You have created walls for yourself. Are the walls to keep the world out or you in?

The walls cast shadows of darkness and restraint. They have stopped you form moving on to better things. This week, look at the walls, understand why you have created them. Now, move beyond them. As you do, acknowledge what is not working for you, possessions, people, ideas, concepts, let go and leave them behind.

The Vision Quest

A vision quest is a way to come to terms with yourself and where you are spiritually. It is a journey through our feelings, our hopes and desires, what we want to manifest and our feelings about potential, opportunities and the sacrifices we are prepared to make.

A shaman will undertake a vision quest to speak to souls and spirits to gain knowledge and perspective, good and bad and what is useful and what is not. They will do this for their own benefit but also the benefit of people they are asked to help. By undertaking vision quests, the shaman will understand how to unlock new possibilities, and close the door to ones that should end to allow the person to move on.

If you do not have a shaman, you can look into your hopes and desires and the fears and anxieties to see the direction in which you should be going. The Vision Quest is asking you to undertaking this personal vision quest at times when you feel stagnant, not progressing, or it is too hard to progress. If you are finding it difficult perhaps you should not be going in that direction?

The Vision Quest ask you to find some quiet time and get out of the house, join in the life force of nature. A house and a car keep you away from growing things. This quiet time will help you understand and tune in to what it is you need to be doing, not what you are doing. When you are outside, perhaps just in your back yard or garden, still busy mind, stop thinking tirelessly and consuming your essential energy. You will need all the energy you have for the new opportunities and the changes The Vision Quest will open up to you.

The Owl

Owl Spirit arrives to remind you that the wisdom within you is informed by your keen senses and the wisdom within the consciousness we all share. The Owl appears to ask you to seek the truth in the darkest places within yourself. This will set you free and restore you to wholeness.

All is well with the Owl to guide you. Deep wisdom into human nature is gained through the ability to recognize untruths. This is an important marker on your path.

The Staff

The staff is the symbol of authority. The shaman’s staff is the home of a helping spirit the shaman uses during healing practices. The spirit in the staff helps and guides and supports you physically and emotionally to find the right course of action. It tells you to move the tip of the staff forward so you can take the step you are intended to take.

The staff again reminds you of the impermanence of all things, and that your authority must come from your deep longing to serve.

Now is the time to study your life path, the next step on your journey. As you ponder the step, recognise that you have already decided to take it, what is missing in action. Use the strength and balance the spirit in the shaman’s staff gives you to move from the negative and inaction to the positive and action. Do It Now!

The Serpent

The Serpent is a symbol of healing and gaining knowledge. Two coiled serpents are part of the Caduceus. The caduceus is the traditional symbol of Hermes and features two snakes winding around an often-winged staff. It is often used as a symbol of medicine especially in the United States. Perhaps the first appearance of a similar symbol, especially in relation to healing, is found in the Jewish Torah, after the Exodus in approximately 1300 BCE.

Emotional and spiritual wounds from the past, perhaps a failed relationship needs healing. Start this week. You do not need the burden of what has failed, but look into why and learn from what happened and the effect on you. Become a new person as a result of the healing.

Look into learning, online courses, training, books, videos. Choose learning methods where you are in control of the pace. You can learn quickly now, do so! The knowledge you gain will help you be successful. If you have doubts about what it is you are to study. Take a moment to ask “The Serpent” what it is you should study and be patient, the answer will come to you when you least expect it.

The Serpent is the life force of Mother Gaia, Mother Earth. In Hinduism, Kundalini energy is represented as a coiled snake. It is a form of divine feminine energy believed to be located at the base of the spine, in the Muladhara. The Serpent brings our life force to the front for your attention. She speaks of the Tree of Knowledge in the Garden of Eden, and reminds us to shed the past the way a snake sheds her old and tired skin. Serpent offers you forbidden fruit that will set your passion and creativity free. This is a time for rejuvenation and energy and progress, if you will embrace it. Welcome it and the new energy for life that shedding your old skin will bring.

Spirit exits in each and every one of us. We are in love when we recognize Spirit in another. That is when we truly fall in love. As we mature and we are able to recognize Spirit more deeply in ourselves, we begin to see it more deeply in others and can understand it in them.

Spirit in another is not surface or ego love. Let the other person show their true selves. Give them time and yourself time to understand each other. If they are only acting as a mirror, reflecting your own surface desires and hopes, and you do not recognize this, you will endure false emotions and hurtful love which will damage both of you for some time to come.

Open your eyes and proceed cautiously in a new relationship.

The staff is the symbol of authority. A shaman’s staff is the home of a helping spirit the shaman uses during his healing practices. The spirit in the staff helps and guides and supports you physically and emotionally to find the right course of action.

The staff reminds you of the impermanence of all things, and that your authority must come from your deep longing to serve.

Now is the time to study your life path, the next step on your journey. As you ponder the step, recognise that you have already decided to take it, what is missing is action. Use the strength and balance the spirit in the shaman’s staff gives you to move from the negative and inaction to the positive and action. Do It Now!

The gatherer is the symbol of the person who before farming and cultivation fed themselves and the tribe with all that was natural and good in nature and provided by Mother Gaia. The gatherer does not stockpile, the Gatherer trusts in the bounty around them.

In this stressful time of COVID and global pandemic. Look at the resources round you, what you have provided for yourself in days, weeks, months and years gone by. Be grateful for what you have and tell the Universe. Now is not the time to buy more, you are rich in your abundance. Prepare for the next phase of your life with a mindset of abundance and prosperity, that will attract more abundance and prosperity into your life. If your mind is fixed on what you do not have or that what you have is not good enough, that is the way it will turn out. Turn off these negative thoughts and looks at the positive and what you can do with what you possess.

Today, we are talking about – The Shaman’s Staff

Over millennia, a shaman’s regalia has often included a magical staff or cane. Chronologically, a staff, not a drum, which is popular today, is frequently shown in prehistoric art up to the Bronze Age. This observation is important since this attribute can be found in scenes which, due to their other features, evoke associations with shamanistic symbolism.

Objects as status symbols have been present in human societies throughout history, with a shaman’s staff or a hunter’s spear representing their place and power in society.

In the Eastern Mojave Desert of the United states, the staff is known as a Shaman’s crook or Poro as evidenced in Rock and cave paintings in the region. Interestingly, in these cave paintings, the shamans staff has a distinct “Shepherds Crook” shape to the top.

Shaman of Chemehuevi tribe in the Eastern Mojave do not have headdress, special clothing, sacred bundles, or other markers to denote their rank and status within the tribe as do shaman in Mongolia and Tibet. The Poro was the sole indicator of their status, their badge of office and could be used to perform magical and ceremonial duties. In all cases, the Poro, or shamans’ staff is not used by the shaman to help walk or something to lean on as an elderly or inform person might.  There is a separate cane for that purpose.

The length of the Shaman’s crook is also an indicator of the power attributed to the crook and the shaman who holds it. The staff allows the shaman to connect with their ancestral and other spirits to ask for help and guidance while performing shamanic healings. These staffs may be made of carved wood, whalebone or marine ivory, and are carried by the shaman during ceremonies. The staff ranges from about 40cm to over a metre, they are used to heal, combat the spirits of disease, and to detect the presence of ‘witchcraft’ or negative magic.[1]

The staff often is from a specific type of tree that has special significance either for the shaman or the tribe. It may be decorated with carvings of animals or spirits and may include a handle carved in the form of an animal. The animal is either a spirit guide, or an animal guide.

As is the case with all true power objects, the staff is imbued with spiritual purpose and becomes a living presence. It becomes a catalyst for change and transformation – even capable

of working on its own on behalf of the shaman.[2]

When the shaman’s helping spirits work through objects such as the shaman’s staff the spiritual power is amplified and becomes available to the shaman. He or she can then use the power in their work. As the shaman continues to use their staff in this manner, the object itself becomes inspirited. Since the objects are then considered to be alive, they function as assistants, partners and guides to the shaman in their work and, as such, must be cared for as living beings.[3]

Because of their role in magical combat, some of these objects are carved to resemble weapons such as clubs and long knives. Others are simple, long and graceful arcs of bone or ivory completely covered in the carved images of the shaman’s helping spirits and clan affiliation symbols. [4]

Among the Selkups, Enets and Nenets of Siberia, the shaman’s staff is made of metal, iron to be precise. Since the shamans in this region sing and dance their journeys, the staff also functions as a rhythm stick. To enhance this role, the staff is forged of iron and covered in iron rings which clang together and against the staff. Thus, it takes the place of the shaman’s drum for the journey. These staffs are one-and- a-half meters tall, and some have the form of a reindeer hoof at their base. [5]

The staff is deeply personal to the shaman carrying it. A contemporary western shaman may simply use a walking stick made from a wood that has some special association with the shaman, or, it may be that the shaman has empowered the walking stick in some special way to be personal to them.

The style of the staff may indicate a particular focus for the shaman. Black shaman of the Buriad and Khamnigan people have staffs with horse head carvings or a mask. White shaman of the same peoples a simpler staff of wood. Shamans of the Darkhad and Uriankhai people have a staff with the remains of three original tree branches on it.

The shaman’s staff has a symbolic role in rituals as a specific tool for speaking, communicating and transmitting information both in initiation ceremonies and ecstatic journeys to the other spiritual realms. A staff is at the level of cosmogony and cosmology since in many myths a staff could act as a creation tool and embody the cosmic axis, the Universe’s vertical model and in ancient times a staff was a universal mediator between the world of humans and the otherworld; it was a means of communication which could be conducted via a word, sound, magical acts and ecstatic journeys between the worlds.

For many peoples, the shaman’s staff is a representation of the connection between the realms of Upper, Middle and Lower Worlds, functioning thus as a model of the World Tree.[6]

The Tree of Life represents a connection between these different realms, and as such it is also a path, or conduit for the shaman to use to visit these realms. He/she climbs the tree to the upper world and uses it to descend to the lower and underworlds. The shaman’s staff represents this connection and some shaman will climb or descend their staff in the same way the other use the Tree.

So, there we have it. A brief introduction to the shaman’s staff an important tool used during ceremonies.

Shaman Energy Card Reading for week of 2020/08/31

The Beloved

The Beloved speaks to our core essence of love, a gift from Spirit. More often we fall in love with appearance, material values, and personality than the Beloved in another person. We cannot truly fall in love if we cannot see the Beloved in ourselves.

Your goal is to recognize the Beloved gift from Spirit in yourself. It will help you love yourself which makes you stronger and more lovable person. It helps you see the Beloved in another person because you are not projecting ideas and wishes on them and you are better able to separate their presence and values from their Beloved gift from Spirit. The more practice the more you will mature and be able to see the Beloved gift all around you.

If you don’t learn to recognize the Beloved in yourself you are destined to fall in love with the ideas and beliefs you are projecting on the other person rather than their own Beloved gift. Ultimately this will lead to another romantic calamity.

The Tree of Life

The Tree of Life, The World Tree, or Arbor Mundi. A sacred symbol from Siberia to the Americas, Australia, India and Europe. Two of its artistic embodiments, the Old Testament Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil and the Norse world tree – Ash Yggdrassil have taken a special place in the world culture. Its roots descend into the Lower world and its branches rise up to the Heavens.

This is a message to you to make sure your feet are on the ground. If your lofty thoughts are fantasy and daydreams and not matched by having your feet firmly grounded the slightest breeze or upset will blow you over. You need to be more grounded.

But, if you are in the same job, or doing the same work over and over and feel you are nothing more than a cog in a machine, you may be too grounded and have not raised yourself and your thoughts up to the higher branches to see what could be changed, so lift yourself up.

Now turn to what it is you want to manifest. What is required to help your desires and wishes grow and become the fruit you harvest from The Tree of Life. Be conscious of what you desire to create and how and what you need to create and take action.
